The Foundation participated in “Culturafest”, a festival organised by the Faculty of Humanities of the University of the Republic of Uruguay (UdelaR), which takes place every two years. On October 19th, the Foundation’s professors (who teach at the University’s Foreign Language Centre), Mr. Diomedes Gariazzo and Mrs. Katerina Kalligiannaki, gave an open Greek language lesson, the rebetika workshop presented its repertoire and Mr. Matías Porteiro offered Greek pastries at the gastronomy stand.
On October 24th, the Foundation hosted a presentation of the book, “The House of Dust of Sumeria“ by the poet Mrs. Circe Maia. The event was led by Prof. Álvaro Revello and moderated by our literature professor, Mrs. Victoria Morón.
The Greek National Day of October 28th was also celebrated this year by the ‘Grecia’ Primary School. The surprise of the day was the excellent ‘syrtaki’ dance performance given by the 5th grade students. The school had requested our Prof. Dionysia Kyriakopoulou, to teach this famous Greek dance to its students and on the occasion of Greek National Day, the world-famous theme of Mikis Theodorakis was heard whilst syrtaki –the dance specifically created for the film “Zorba the Greek”– was performed by its pupils.
Our Foundation was an official sponsor of the “Clergy-Laic Assembly of Hellenic Communities and Foundations” that took place from November 15th to 18th in Buenos Aires, with 600 participants from several Latin American countries.
Upon the invitation of His Eminence Archbishop of Latin America Iosif, our director Mrs. Soraya Ochoviet moderated the roundtable discussion, entitled “Education, Culture and Pedagogy“. The Foundation received special acknowledgement for its overall participation and assistance at the event.
