On December 1st, a delegation of students from our Lyceum visited the Chios Mastic Museum to view, amongst other things, the emblematic painting “Prometheus Unbound” by the Danish painter Carl Heinrich Bloch. It is worth noting that this particular work was commissioned in 1863 by King George A’ of Greece (who was of Danish origin), as it represented his ambitions for the universal liberation and rebirth of Greece after the Revolution of 1821. It was found on the Tatoi estate and was declared a monument by the Ministry of Culture in 2022.
The students had the opportunity to observe the intense drama depicted in this painting, in which Prometheus is shown at the decisive moment of his liberation, allowing them to discuss the symbolic power of this piece of art, which continues to inspire through its portrayal of the struggle for knowledge and freedom.
The School Principal, Mr Michalis Xynos, and teacher, Ms Martha Sereti, accompanied the educational visit and emphasized the importance of such experiential approaches in cultivating a deeper understanding of the art and mythology shaping our cultural heritage.
