On Saturday, August 9th, the Maria Tsakos Foundation presented the Jules Dassin’s film “The Rehearsal” (1974) to the EUNIC European Film Cycle. This year’s Film Cycle, organised by the member institutes of EUNIC Montevideo (European Union National Institutes for Culture) on the theme of 40 years of democracy in Uruguay, took place in the auditorium of the Spanish Cultural Center (Centro Cultural de España). Featuring well-known figures such as Melina Mercouri, Mikis Theodorakis, Olympia Dukakis, Yannis Markopoulos, Arthur Miller and Laurence Olivier, this bold and unclassifiable cinematic essay is an indictment of the Colonels’ junta and a rehearsal for the anticipated political spring.

Due congratulations are extended to Dionysia for the selection of the film, the translation and the Spanish subtitles, which she diligently worked on. Through the work of Ms. Dionysia Kyriakopoulou, the film was successfully presented during the Film Cycle, allowing the Uruguayan audience to become more familiar with the events of recent Greek history.
The EUNIC European Art Cycle, which we organised for the first time, was inaugurated on September 3rd. EUNIC Montevideo, in collaboration with the architect Ms. Ana María Sciandro, will present a cycle of lectures during the Autumn months -September, October, and November- which will take place in the modern halls of Espacio Colabora of the Municipality of Montevideo. The first lecture, entitled “Nordic Light: Primitive Nature and Introspection“, was a great success, with an audience of over 120 persons.

This year, we celebrated the European Day of Languages with EUNIC Montevideo in the same modern space of Espacio Colabora. On September 18th, the Uruguayan public had the opportunity to take part in fun language activities, in an event where participant groups change rooms every ten minutes on a circuit covering a total of seven European languages. The Greek activity was led by our professors, Ms. Katerina Kalligiannaki, Ms. Dionysia Kyriakopoulou and Ms. Akrivi Kaldiri. At the beginning of the event, our director, Ms. Soraya Ochoviet, gave a brief historical introduction to the language families of Europe, particularly the Indo-European family.
